How to calculate a tip manually (the formula)
The tip formula is: Tip = Bill × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). The total is Bill + Tip. To split among people, divide the total by the number of people.
Example calculation
Your bill is $60.00 and you want to leave an 18% tip. Tip = $60 × 18 ÷ 100 = $10.80. Total = $60 + $10.80 = $70.80. Split between 2 people: $70.80 ÷ 2 = $35.40 each.
Common mistakes
- Calculating tip after tax — Some people prefer to tip on the pre-tax amount to avoid tipping on tax. Be aware of which amount you are using.
- Forgetting to split the tip too — When splitting the bill, remember to split both the base amount and the tip evenly.
