About the Percentage Calculator

This Percentage Calculator combines four essential percentage computations in one place. Use the main Percentage Calculator to solve for any missing term in the equation P × V₁ = V₂. The Common Phrases section handles everyday questions like "What is X% of Y?" or "X is what percent of Y?" The Percentage Difference calculator measures the relative difference between two numbers, and the Percentage Change calculator shows increases or decreases from an old value to a new value.

The Formulas

Percentage Calculator: P × V₁ = V₂ → P = (V₂ / V₁) × 100  |  V₁ = V₂ / (P / 100)  |  V₂ = P × V₁ / 100
Common Phrases: Z = X% × Y  |  % = X / Y × 100  |  Z = X / (Y / 100)
Percentage Difference: |V₁ − V₂| / ((V₁ + V₂) / 2) × 100
Percentage Change: ((New − Old) / Old) × 100

How to Use Each Mode

  1. Percentage Calculator (P × V₁ = V₂): Fill in any two of the three fields (percentage, first value, or result) and leave the third blank. The missing value will be computed automatically.
  2. Common Phrases: Select the phrase that matches what you want to ask. Enter the two known values, and the answer to the question will appear.
  3. Percentage Difference: Enter two numbers. The calculator returns the absolute percentage difference between them using the mean of the two values as the reference.
  4. Percentage Change: Enter an old value and a new value. The calculator shows whether it is an increase or decrease, the absolute amount of change, and the percentage change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is percentage difference different from percentage change?

Percentage difference uses the average of the two values as the denominator, making it symmetric — the result is the same regardless of which value is used as the reference. Percentage change uses the old value as the denominator and can be positive (increase) or negative (decrease).

Can I leave more than one field blank in the main calculator?

No. The main calculator requires exactly two values to be filled in. Leaving two or more fields blank, or filling all three, will trigger an error message.

What does "X is Y% of what?" mean?

This calculates the base value. For example, "50 is 25% of what?" means: 25% of some number equals 50. The answer is 200, because 25% of 200 is 50. Mathematically: Result = X / (Y / 100).
