What is an Ovulation Calculator?
An Ovulation Calculator estimates when you are most fertile during your menstrual cycle. By entering the first day of your last period and your average cycle length, you can identify your fertile window — the best time to try to conceive.
How to calculate ovulation manually (the formula)
Ovulation day: LMP + (cycle length − 14) days.
Fertile window: ovulation day − 5 days through ovulation day + 1 day.
For a 28-day cycle: ovulation = day 14. Fertile window = days 9 through 15.
Example calculation
LMP = 1 March 2025, cycle = 32 days. Ovulation = 1 March + (32 − 14) = 1 March + 18 days = 19 March 2025. Fertile window = 14 March through 20 March.
Common mistakes
- Thinking ovulation is always on day 14 — ovulation day depends on cycle length. Only women with a perfect 28-day cycle ovulate on day 14.
- Relying only on a calculator — Calculators assume average biology. For the most accurate timing, combine with ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking.
- Starting too late in the cycle — If you wait until after ovulation to have intercourse, you have missed the window. Start trying several days before your estimated ovulation day.
