A depth of 2–3 inches is ideal for most flower beds and landscape areas. This is deep enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, but shallow enough to prevent root rot and pest problems.
Most retail bags of mulch come in 2 cu ft or 3 cu ft sizes. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard (27 cu ft). Buying in bulk is typically more economical for larger projects over 2–3 cubic yards.
