MPG (miles per gallon) measures distance per volume of fuel — higher is better. L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) measures volume per distance — lower is better. The US uses MPG, while most other countries use L/100km.
The odometer method is accurate if you fill your tank completely both times and record the exact odometer readings. For best results, fill up at the same pump, use the same fueling technique, and track over a mix of city and highway driving.
