How to calculate lean body mass manually (the formula)
LBM = total weight (kg) × (1 − body fat%). If you weigh 75 kg with 18% body fat: LBM = 75 × (1 − 0.18) = 75 × 0.82 = 61.5 kg. Your lean mass is 61.5 kg and fat mass is 13.5 kg.
Example calculation
A 65 kg woman with 25% body fat: fat mass = 65 × 0.25 = 16.3 kg. Lean body mass = 65 − 16.3 = 48.7 kg. Her LBM percentage is 48.7 ÷ 65 = 75%.
Common mistakes
- Using an inaccurate body fat measurement — The LBM result is only as accurate as your body fat input. Different methods (calipers, BIA, DEXA) give different readings.
- Confusing lean body mass with muscle mass — LBM includes bones, organs, and water, not just muscle. Changes in hydration can affect LBM readings.
