How to calculate flooring manually (the formula)
Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Calculate the area: Area = Length × Width. Divide by the coverage per flooring unit: Units = Area ÷ Coverage per Unit. Add waste: Total = Units × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100).
Example calculation
A 12 ft × 15 ft room has an area of 180 sq ft. If each flooring box covers 20 sq ft: 180 ÷ 20 = 9 boxes. With 10% waste: 9 × 1.10 = 9.9, so buy 10 boxes.
Common mistakes
- Not accounting for waste — Always add 5–10% for cuts, mistakes, and damaged pieces. Without waste, you may run short during installation.
- Measuring in the wrong unit — Ensure all measurements are in the same unit. Mixing feet and inches without conversion leads to large errors.
