How to calculate conception date manually (the formula)
From LMP (28-day cycle): Conception ≈ LMP + 14 days.
From due date: Conception ≈ due date − 266 days (38 weeks).
Adjusted for cycle length: Conception ≈ LMP + (cycle length − 14) days.
Example calculation
LMP = 1 January 2025, cycle = 28 days. Conception = 1 January + 14 days = 15 January 2025. Due date = 15 January + 266 days = 8 October 2025.
Common mistakes
- Confusing conception with implantation — Conception (fertilisation) happens at ovulation. Implantation occurs 6–12 days later when the embryo attaches to the uterus. They are different events.
- Assuming day 14 for every cycle — ovulation day is cycle length minus 14, not always day 14. A 33-day cycle ovulates around day 19, not day 14.
- Treating the date as exact — Conception can occur within a 12–24 hour window after ovulation, and sperm can survive for days. The exact moment of fertilisation is rarely pinpointable.
