What is a Color Palette Generator?
A Color Palette Generator creates harmonious color schemes based on color theory principles. It helps designers, artists, and developers quickly find color combinations that work well together for their projects.
How to generate palettes manually (the formula)
Color harmony rules are based on the color wheel. Complementary colors are opposite each other (180° apart). Analogous colors are adjacent (30° apart). Triadic colors are evenly spaced (120° apart). Monochromatic uses varying lightness of one hue.
Example calculation
For a complementary palette starting with blue (H=210°), the complementary hue is 210° + 180° = 30° (orange). This creates a high-contrast palette with two colors that visually balance each other.
Common mistakes
- Using too many colors — Stick to 3–5 colors per palette to maintain visual harmony. More colors create visual noise.
- Ignoring saturation and lightness — Harmony depends on more than hue. Adjust saturation and lightness to ensure the palette is balanced and readable.
- Not testing for accessibility — Ensure sufficient contrast between text and background colors for readability.
