What is an Age Calculator?

An Age Calculator computes your exact age in years, months, and days between your date of birth and any target date. You provide a birth date and a "calculate age at" date, and the tool returns your precise age broken down into years, months, and days, along with totals in months, weeks, days, and even hours. People use age calculators to find their current age for forms and applications, to calculate someone's age at a future milestone, to determine age eligibility for programs, or simply to see how many days old they are. The calculator handles all the challenging date math — leap years, month length variations, and end-of-month adjustments — automatically.

How to calculate age manually (the formula)

To calculate age manually, subtract the birth date from the target date. First, compute the year difference: target year minus birth year. Then compute the month difference: target month minus birth month. If the result is negative, borrow 12 months and subtract one year. Finally, compute the day difference: target day minus birth day. If the result is negative, borrow days from the previous month (using the actual number of days in that month) and subtract one month. The formula is: Age = (Years, Months, Days) where Years = TargetYear − BirthYear (adjusted for month/day), Months = TargetMonth − BirthMonth (adjusted), Days = TargetDay − BirthDay (adjusted using actual month lengths). For example, if born on March 15, 1995 and the target date is January 10, 2025: Years = 29 (2025 − 1995 − 1 because the month hasn't reached March), Months = 9 (January is month 1, March is month 3; so 1 + 12 − 3 = 10, minus another 1 because the day hasn't reached 15 = 9), Days = 26 (January 10 − March 15 requires borrowing from December, which has 31 days; so 31 + 10 − 15 = 26).

Example calculation

Suppose you were born on June 1, 1990 and want to know your exact age on December 25, 2025. Enter June 1, 1990 as the date of birth and December 25, 2025 as the age date. The calculator computes: years = 2025 − 1990 = 35. Since December is after June, no year adjustment needed. Months = 12 − 6 = 6. Days = 25 − 1 = 24. Your exact age is 35 years, 6 months, and 24 days. The calculator also shows: total months = 426, total weeks = 1,854, total days = 12,981, and total hours = 311,544. This full breakdown gives you age in whatever unit is most convenient.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to adjust for month/day order — If the target month is before the birth month, you must subtract one year and add 12 months. Simply subtracting years directly gives the wrong age.
  • Using 30 days for every month — When calculating day differences, you must use the actual number of days in the previous month (28, 29, 30, or 31). Using a flat 30 produces errors.
  • Ignoring leap years for February 29 birthdays — If born on February 29, the legal birthday in non-leap years is February 28 or March 1 depending on jurisdiction. The calculator handles this automatically.
  • Confusing age at last birthday with exact age — Your age at last birthday is just the year difference. Your exact age in years, months, and days is more precise and useful.
  • Swapping the birth date and target date — If the birth date is later than the target date, the result is meaningless. The calculator handles this by swapping them, but you should verify the dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age in years, months, and days?

Enter your date of birth and the date you want to calculate age at. The calculator returns your exact age in years, months, and days, plus totals in months, weeks, days, and hours.

Does the age calculator account for leap years?

Yes, the calculator automatically accounts for leap years when computing the difference between the birth date and the target date, so February 29 birthdays are handled correctly.

Can I calculate age at a future date?

Yes, enter any future date in the Age at this date field. The calculator will show your age on that future date, which is useful for planning milestones or retirement.

What's the difference between age in years and age in total months?

Age in years, months, days is a broken-down representation (e.g., 30 years, 5 months, 12 days). Total months converts the entire span into months (e.g., 365 months), which is useful for comparison.

Can I compare two people's ages?

Yes, use the Add to compare feature. Calculate one person's age first, then calculate another person's age and add it to compare them side by side.

How accurate is the age calculation?

Results are exact to the day. The calendar logic handles all date calculations precisely, including leap years and months with different lengths.
